hair excitement

June 11, 2009

My first appointment with my new beautician is Saturday! I can’t wait!

So far I haven’t been that successful with creating great hair 8 weeks out from my relaxer. I’ve mostly kept it clean and flat ironed without a lot of attention to health. To my credit, I have been doing homework and experimenting a little with suggested methods and products, but I haven’t settled into a routine.

I’ve been waiting on my first appointment to truly define my hair care regimen. My beautician is recommending I go with Biolage Hydratherapie products. I’ve used them before and loved the way they made me feel, so this might be the way I go. I won’t buy anything until Saturday, but you know I’m itching to go out and get bottles of shampoo and conditioner right now!

I can’t wait to hear what she has to say about my hair, what I can expect and even to just schedule my next appointment, lol. After reading lots of great blogs, I hope to grow out my hair between now and the end of the year to get a true sense of my commitment to going natural. On one hand I’m in love with natural hair, but on the other I fear (seriously fear) the big chop. I am a big fan of short hair, I just fear being able to maintain it.

I believe the right products will ease my concerns. When my hair is moisturized it’s a rock star. When it’s dry, it’s a tight, scary mess. I know if I find my products, I’ll be ok. Speaking of products, along with the Biolage recommendation, I’ve also learned a few interesting techniques like leaving in conditioner from Teri of Tightly Curly and have even been inspired to create my own hair butter by the author of the Texture Playground.

It truly is an exciting new world to find myself in. As someone who comes from a family of naturals, natural hair has never been a big deal. I’m excited to be rejoining it again after being gone these past 20 years!
