This weekend was a fun filled adventure in hair products. I tried out several with mixed results.
My first was a deep conditioner with Organic Root Stimulator Mayonnaise.
I picked this product up after reading an article on Tracee Ellis Ross’ hair and the products she loved. After about 30 minutes, I rinsed out the conditioner to find soft, shiny hair. I plan on using it weekly over the next month before I make any judgements on its effectiveness. I will say that I like the idea of a protein conditioner (that doesn’t leave my hair hard) and the price is right up my alley at $9.99.
My next product was the Carrot Oil from the same line. While my hair was completely moisturized, I think I over did it and ended up with a greasy feeling. Full of great ingredients like aloe vera, vitamins, honey and nettle, I will definitely give this product another chance – with a lighter hand. The smell didn’t agree with me, but I’m willing to try it again over a long weekend and might even experiment with fragrance using several essential oils I have on hand.
After washing out the Carrot Oil the next day (it had to be done), I tried Miss Jessie’s Baby Buttercreme. Even though I was probably as equally heavy handed with it, the result was wonderfully moisturized, soft, great smelling hair. I could comb through it easily and the results lasted through the next day. I’m starting to judge products based on the look of my roots. Moisturizing products make my roots blend easily with my relaxed ends and leave them looking healthy and hydrated. Ineffective ones leave my roots looking plain old dry.
Today I feel like it’s time for a wash again. If my hair was long enough, I’d probably pull it into a bun to stretch one more day, but since it’s still in a bob, I have to wash it to keep it looking fresh and smooth.
Speaking of length, I noticed today that my hair has definitely grown out of the clean bob cut I got during my last hair appointment (June 2009). That’s great news because it means my hair is growing, growing, growing! I believe with proper moisturizing, I can avoid the big chop for the year-long timeframe I have in mind for transitioning. Even better, I might have enough length to do a small bob or similar protective style by winter.
15 weeks and the journey continues…
